WINE TASTING
First of all I would like to thank Jason for putting on another great tasting. As usual you did an outstanding job. I also want to thank our own Terry Mcdonner who got with Jason and came up with some of the best cheeses we've ever had. Between the two of them they were able to pair up the wines and cheeses perfectly. Thanks again for a job well done.
Having said that, those who didn't make it know what you missed out on.
Everyone had a great time even though the turnout was a little disappointing. I would have like to have seen more of our members. After Jason finished his presentation there was some concern expressed by a couple of people over what we were going to do with all of the left over opened bottles of wine. Not to worry, we took care of all of them and made sure there was no wasted wine or cheese.
Just a early reminder about our 4th of July cruise to the south end to watch the boat parade. Hopefully we want get caught in a wind storm this year. As of now we have 3 boats signed up. Following the cruise we'll cook up some hot dogs and have some apple pie. I'll need to know how many are coming to this one so we'll have enough food on hand. Cast off time will be between 10:30 and 11.

JAMBALAYA DINNER
It turned out to be another great event. We had a nice crowd and it was peaceful on the lake due to it being closed to power boat traffic. We had several small boats out sailing during the day. Dewey showed his sailing DVD we played some music and I think everything went well.
June 14 will be the date of our annual wine and cheese tasking party hosted by Jason Johnson of Purveyer Of Fine Wines. I hope a lot of you can make that event also. There will be a $10 per person charge for this social event. Hopefully we can do as well this year as last and make enough to defer the cost of the 4th of July cruise, hot dogs and apple pie like last year.
Thank You,
Greg Bradley

MARDI GRAS CRUISE
Well I guess I have to say it. You should have been there. Even though the wind was blowing 15 to 20 when we all got to the club and it got higher as the day went on, a great time was had by everyone. We kept checking the wind and around 3 we recorded a gust of 25.4. Needless to say we didn't go out or down to New Roads. However, the Krew of Pelican rolled sometime around 1, I think. We only had one float and at times it didn't appear to be moving too fast but the beads still flew into the crowd. We'll have pictures on the web site soon. We also had some great food and plenty of Mardi Gras Spirits, if you know what I mean. I think we had about 15 members present during the day.
Now we're going to do some winter time sailing on Sunday afternoon around 2. I'd like to have some good communications during this time so everyone will know who's coming up to the club and how many will be there. If we can, we'll try to do a little informal racing if the situation presents it's self. Also remember our next scheduled event will be our third annual Poker Run starting at 1:00 followed by a pot luck dinner. Make your plans for that one. See you at the club.
Thank You,
Greg Bradley

SPRING REGATTA
Many Thanks-
That's the best title I could come up with for this note. Thanks to
everyone one who participated in our 2008 Spring Regatta Saturday.
Whether
you raced or helped in any way I thank you for making this a great
regatta.
We could not do it without all the help and support. A very special
thanks
to West Marine of Baton Rouge for their sponsorship and support of our
regatta. You made Saturday a special day for us all. Everyone should
know
that they donated the two large orange marker buoys we used Saturday.
The
only way you wont see these is if they are put around a curve in the
lake.
For everyone who couldn't make it you missed some outstanding sailing.
Even
though the weather never really turned out the way it was forecast, it
was
still an excellent day for a regatta. It wasn't pretty, as they say,
but it
was perfect. Most of the day the winds were from the N to NW, give or
take a
degree or 3 or 4, you know how that goes. The speed was 8 to 10 gusting
to
12 to 15 I would say. We got in 3 races, the results will be posted on
the
web site this week. The pictures are already up if you would like to
look
them over. After the first race everyone enjoyed some of best BBQ
chicken
you can get along with BBQ beans and potato salad. I say it was good
because
there wasn't a lot left and we had plenty. We also had our usual great
dips,
desserts and munchies we all love to eat along with plenty of beer,
wine and
water. What else could you ask for.
Check your calendar (May) for our next event which will be sponsored
by our
social committee. That means it'll be paid for by your $5.00 social fee
so I
hope you will come out and take advantage of the opportunity.
Thank You,
Greg Bradley

2008 August Fish Fry
We had over 20 people present Saturday, which I thought given the weather conditions, was pretty good. I bought 10 pounds of catfish and fried it all this time. When it was over there were none left, so I guess it was good.
I would like to thank everyone who brought stuff and everyone who helped put on the event. I really appreciate all the help.
I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce everyone to our newest member, David Burgin. Dave has a camp almost across from PYC and will be storing his 17 foot Hobie with us. Dave was voted on and "accepted" by the board Sunday. I wrote that note a little too early this morning Dave!
Everyone keep in mind that our fall regatta is scheduled for October 18th.
Maybe we'll have some good wind and most of the power boats should be gone by then. Do your best to make plans to come up and join us.
Thank You,
Greg Bradley

Gustav Cleanup Day
Yesterday was a special day at Pelican. Over 20 of our members turned out to help with the hurricane cleanup. Having that many people helping made the job easier and faster for us all. I would like to thank all of you for your support in this effort and I know all of our members will appreciate your hard work when they see the pile of debris by the road.
I would like to offer a special thanks to Rob Parker who spent practically an entire day up there cutting up the tree trunk. By doing this the work party was able to clear the entire parking lot in just one morning. Well done Rob, thanks a lot.
Another thank you to Terry McDonner for supplying the burgers and hot dogs and also to Jerry and Gretchen Daffin for bringing all of the other food and for Jerry's pit skills. Everything was great. We worked hard and ate well.
A word of caution however. There are several boards missing from the front pier and until the water goes down at least another foot or so they can not be replaced. If you have to go out on that pier please watch your step.
Thank You,
Greg Bradley

4th Of July Parade
Let me start by saying we all arrived at the club to a beautiful summer day. There was a nice 5 to 8 mph south wind and everyone was eager to get out on the water. We actually ended up with 6 boats this year and about 20 people. We all took off for the south end of the lake to watch the parade and enjoy the day. Everyone had a great time.
Now, if you believe that story I've got some water front property you might be interested in.
There were 6 boats and 20 people, but the real story was this. The new AC wasn't working, hungry rat we think, no wind, hot, a lot of power boats, more than we've had in the past, the lake was rough and that's when things started to go down hill. We got to our spot to watch the parade but Mary Leake became overheated so Beaux had to head back to the club.
Riley had been eating chips, drinking water and laying in the hot cabin in rough water, guess what. I decided to take her back to the club so we went by Dennis's boat to let him know we were leaving. Reed wanted a ride back because his son was hot also. We picked them up and off we went. After we got back to the club Dennis called and said at 1:45 they still hadn't seen a parade boat. (it started at 1) An hour later they returned to the club just before it started to rain and get everybody's sails wet.
Yea I know, things didn't go well until now. As planned we had hot dogs with chili & cheese along with apple pie and ice cream. I want to thank Lydia Kennedy for the chili, apparently everyone liked it, there wasn't any left. Also, Mary Leake brought a Greek pasta salad that was excellent.
Linda brought her veggie pizza which was also gone along with the salad.
I have to give the commodore's award for persistence and dedication to sailing to Dewey and Marie. They made it most of the way to the parade but had to turn around because, I suspect big waves, heat and no wind were the cause. We offered them a tow but they wanted to sail all the way back, which they did. I don't want to leave out Fuzzy & Alice either. They did a lot of sailing in no wind also. Members like these four are what make us a great club. They come just to enjoy sailing and I think that's great.
The social committee is considering changing the agenda for our 4th of July event. If you have any suggestions let us know.
Thank You,
Greg Bradley
